Hello friends,
Thanksgiving is here. I’m sure you are looking forward to the much needed break. Many of you will travel to be with family and close friends. And others gearing up to clinch Black Friday deals in order to stock up for Christmas!
Tables will soon be full of thanksgiving delicacies like succulent turkey, stuffing, gravy, mashed potatoes, cranberry jelly, corn bread, pumpkin pie etc etc. Usually turkey is not my bird of choice, but on Thanksgiving it takes on a new meaning and I find myself actually going in for seconds. But more than the food, it’s the holiday spirit that gives me the warm fuzzies. Families getting together around the dinner table with hearts filled with gratitude for all the good things in life, however simple they might be!
The past month has seen the culmination of a rather bitter and distasteful election season, leaving many people wondering what the future of America will look like. So whatever your political inclination, and whether your candidate lost or won, we have much positivity and hope to inject back into the nation.
So this Thanksgiving, why not try something new? Play a round robin of things that you are thankful for. Involve every person, including children gathered around the table and feel your heart swell as each person states what they are thankful for. It’s a start!

Recognition in Applied Sciences–Prof T.V. RajanBabu
This November, the Indian American Kerala Cultural and Civic Center (http://keralacenterny.com/) honored five Indian American Malayalees for their outstanding achievements in their field of specialization or for their service to the society. Among the honorees was Prof T.V. RajanBabu, Professor and Kiberly Chair in Chemistry at Ohio State University (Columbus, OH) in Applied Sciences.
Prof. RajanBabu received his undergraduate degrees from Kerala University (CMS College, Kottayam) and The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT, Madras). After obtaining a PhD degree in chemistry from The Ohio State University and a research fellowship at Harvard University, he joined Dupont Central Research and Development becoming a Research Fellow. 
He returned to Ohio State as a Professor in 1995 and currently holds the Kimberly Chair in Chemistry. His research in organic synthesis, supported by the US NSF and NIH, aims to discover more efficient and environmentally benign methods useful for the manufacture of pharmaceuticals and other such value-added chemicals.
He is the author of over 150 publications and 13 US patents. Among the many honors he has received, he is especially proud of the Distinguished Alumnus award from IIT Madras.
This is an immense honor both for Prof RajanBabu’s family and the Columbus Malayalee Community!

YWCA: The Experience

Helen Steiner Rice, a famous writer in 1918, once said, “Time is not measured by years that we live, but the deeds that we do and the joys that we give.” In October, a group of adult volunteers and youth volunteers from COMA had the opportunity to serve breakfast at the YWCA family center. This was definitely an experience for everyone to have.
To those who don’t know, YWCA family center is an emergency shelter and critical services to stabilize homeless in central Ohio. Here people receive healthy meals, warm beds, basic everyday items, and transportation assistance during their stay. In total, they have more than one hundred non profit organizations like COMA helping them out.
I know most of us have very busy days and lives to live and we think we have seen it all, but in reality we have just heard about what’s happening. You know the expression pictures are worth more than a thousand words. Well, that really applied when I got to see some of the people that lived in YWCA. Most of us don’t realize what kind of people actually live in these homeless shelters. In reality, most of them are just very kind people who are working on minimum wages and trying to survive in society. I felt bad for the kids sometimes because unlike you and me they never had a meal made from their mom’s kitchen, and unlike us, they usually hear ‘No’ more times then we do.
In addition to having the human connection to the outside world, I also felt volunteering was also a great way for me to get off my phone, roll up my sleeves, and enjoy doing some work with my peers Aishwarya, Anju, Adithya, and Aravind. All of us contributed by doing simple tasks and learning special skills like leadership and teamwork. Adults also played a big part as they made the food with love and care, just like they would do at home.
Would I recommend volunteering at the YWCA family center with COMA? Of course, because it’s a great way for teenagers to get service hours and it’s a great way for you to be more involved in your community. Overall, I think this experience was a great learning opportunity and a fun experience for all of us that came.

Our Veteran’s Day Celebration

November 11 is Veteran’s day- a day to honor men and women who have fought to protect us and our families. Each year, my school, Thomas Worthington High School, invites veterans from all over the country to come and share their amazing and inspiring stories with us. Students look forward to meeting them each year. This year, a little over twenty veterans attended with a wide variety of representation from each armed force.
Instead of going to social studies class that day, we met in the library. After the veterans introduced themselves, they split us up according class. My class got to meet Recruiting Officer Middleton, a retired army lieutenant from a small town here in Ohio. He had retired from the army a couple years ago and he now worked as a recruiting officer in Columbus. He told us all about his life as a lieutenant in Afghanistan. He took his time and he was very open and willing to share their personal experiences.
We pestered him with tons of questions and he was always happy to answer them for us. For example, we asked him what the biggest challenge was while he was abroad and he replied that it was definitely learning to communicate and connect with the natives. He had to be able to talk to them and help them through situations that may put his and their lives in jeopardy.
Hearing stories from these veterans made me reflect on my own life. I have had many great experiences, while the army has been abroad fighting to keep all of us safe. Meeting the veterans has given me a greater appreciation for the life that I have and has given me a new perspective when I look back on all the things that I have done in the past.
Hearing from the veterans was a wonderful experience and I can’t wait to hear more stories next year!

കോഴിക്കുഞ്ഞുമായി ഒരു യുദ്ധം
കഥ എഴുതി യാതൊരു മുന്പരിചയവുമില്ലാത്ത ഞാന് ഇപ്പോള് ഇതാ ആ സാഹസം കാണിക്കുന്നു. പോരയ്മകള് ഉണ്ടെങ്കില് ഷ്കമിക്കുക.ഇവിടെ പറയാന് പോകുന്നത് ചെറുപ്പത്തില് ഞാന് ഒരു പാവം കോഴിക്കുഞ്ഞുമായി യുദ്ധം ചെയ്ത കഥയാണ്. കഥ ഇങ്ങനെ…
ഒരു ശനിയാഴ്ച രാവിലെ ആണു സംഭവം. അന്നു ഞാന് നാലം ക്ലാസ്സിലും കുട്ടന്-അതായതു എന്റെ അനുജന് ഒന്നാം ക്ലാസ്സിലും പഠിക്കുന്ന സമയം. ശനിയും ഞായറും! കളിച്ചു തിമിര്ക്കാനുള്ള ദിവസങ്ങള്.
രാവിലെ പതിവു പോലെ അമ്മ ദോശയുണ്ടാക്കി.ഞാനും കുട്ടനും വഴക്കിട്ടു കൊണ്ട് അതു കഴിച്ചു തീര്ത്തു. ഈ വഴക്ക് പതിവാണ്. എനിക്കു 2 എണ്ണം തന്നാല് അവനു 4 എണ്ണം വേണം.അതിനാണു് വഴക്ക്.ഒരൊറ്റ കാര്യത്തിലേ അവന് ആ വാശി ഇല്ലാതുള്ളൂ, അടി കിട്ടുമ്പോള് മാത്രം. അപ്പോള് നേരെ മറിച്ചാണ്. അവന് 1 കിട്ടിയാല് എനിക്കു 10 കിട്ടണം. എനിക്കു തല്ലു കിട്ടുമ്പോള് അവന്റെ മുഖത്തു വിരിയുന്ന സന്തോഷം കാണണം.
അങ്ങനെ, പ്രാതലൊക്കെ കഴിച്ചു് ഞങ്ങള് പറമ്പു തെണ്ടാനിറങ്ങി. നേരെ കണ്ടാല് കീരിയും പാമ്പും പോലെ ആണെങ്കിലും ഞങ്ങള് ഒരുമിച്ചാണു കളിയും തെണ്ടലും എല്ലാം. അന്നു പറമ്പില് കൂടുതലും റബ്ബര് മരങ്ങളാണ്. അതിനു പിറകിലായി മറ്റമ്മയുടെ വീട്.മറ്റമ്മക്ക് വയസ്സായി.അവിടെ കുറേ കോഴിയും,കോഴിക്കുഞ്ഞുങ്ങളും ഒക്കെയുണ്ട്. അവറ്റകള് കഴിക്കാനായി ഞങ്ങളുടെ പറമ്പിലും വരും.
ഞാനും കുട്ടനും കൂടി പ്രകൃതി നിരീക്ഷണം എന്ന വ്യാജേന വല്ല്യ ഗമയില് റബ്ബര് മരങ്ങള്ക്കിടയിലൂടെ നടപ്പാണ്. അപ്പോള് അതാ അമ്മക്കോഴിയും കുഞ്ഞുങ്ങളും ഞങ്ങളുടെ മുന്നിലൂടെ മണ്ണും മാന്തി നടക്കുന്നു. എനിക്കു പെട്ടെന്ന് ഒരാഗ്രഹം. ഒരു കോഴിക്കുഞ്ഞിനെ കൈയ്യിലെടുക്കണം. ചുമ്മാ ഒന്നു നിരീക്ഷിച്ചിട്ടു വിട്ടേക്കാം.പക്ഷെ എങനെ അതിനെ പിടിക്കും?കോഴിക്കുഞ്ഞു ഓടും എന്നതു ഒരു കാര്യം. പിന്നെ അതിനെ തൊടാന് ചെന്നാല് അമ്മക്കോഴി എന്നെ ശരിയാക്കും എന്ന ഭയവും. ഞാന് എന്റെ ശിങ്കിടിയെ(കുട്ടനെ) കാര്യം ധരിപ്പിച്ചു. അവന് എനിക്കു ധൈര്യം പകര്ന്നു.
അങ്ങനെ കൂലംകഷമായ ആലോചനക്കു ശേഷം ഞങ്ങള് ഒരു വഴി കണ്ടെത്തി. ഞാന് യുദ്ധത്തിനു തയ്യാറായി. കുട്ടന് സൈന്യാധിപന്റെ വേഷമണിഞ്ഞു..അമ്മക്കോഴിയെ ഓടിക്കുക എന്ന ധീര ദൌത്യം അവന് ഏറ്റെടുത്തു. ഞാന് കുഞ്ഞിന്റെ പിറകെ ഓടാന് തുടങ്ങി. പക്ഷെ ഈ കോഴിക്കുഞ്ഞ് ഒളിമ്പിക്സ് ചമ്പ്യനെപോലെ ഓടുന്നു, പറക്കുന്നു. എനിക്കൊന്നു തൊടാന് പോലും കിട്ടുന്നില്ല. സംഗതി ഇങ്ങനെ പോയാല് ശരിയാവില്ല. ഞാന് എന്റെ ആയുധം എടുത്തു. മറ്റൊന്നുമല്ല, ഒരു ചെറിയ റബ്ബര് കമ്പ്. അതു വച്ച് അതിനെ പിടിച്ചു നിര്ത്താം. എന്നിട്ടു കൈയ്യിലെടുക്കാം. ഇതായിരുന്നു പ്ലാന്.
ഞാന് യുദ്ധം തുടര്ന്നു. കമ്പു വച്ചു പതുക്കെ പിടിച്ചു നിര്താന് ചെല്ലുമ്പോള് അതെന്നെ ഇട്ടു വട്ടു കളിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. എനിക്കു വാശിയായി. കൂടുതല് ശക്തിയോടെ ഞാന് പൊരുതാന് തുടങ്ങി. കുറച്ചു കഴിഞ്ഞപ്പോള് കോഴിക്കുഞ്ഞിന്റെ സ്പീട് കുറഞ്ഞു. ഞാന് വിജയിക്കാന് പോകുന്നതിന്റെ സന്തോഷമായി എനിക്ക്.പക്ഷെ..ഞാന് കോരിയെടുക്കാന് ചെല്ലുമ്പോള് എനിക്കു മനസ്സിലായി. അതിനു ജീവനില്ല….
എന്റെ ദൈവമെ! ഞാന് എല്ലാ ദൈവങ്ങളെയും വിളിച്ചുപോയി. സങ്കടവും പേടിയും എല്ലാം ഒരുമിച്ചു വന്ന ഒരവസ്ഥ. ഞാന് ഒരു കോഴിക്കുഞ്ഞിനെ കൊന്നിരിക്കുന്നു! ഓര്ക്കാന് കൂടി വയ്യ. ഉമ്മറത്തു കറുത്ത കണ്ണട വച്ചു ചാരുകസേരയില് നിവര്ന്നു കിടക്കുന്ന മുത്തശ്ശനെ ഓര്ത്തപ്പോള് ഹൃദയം പടപടാ അടിക്കാന് തുടങ്ങി.
സൈന്യാധിപന് ഇതൊന്നുമറിയാതെ ഇപ്പൊഴും കോഴിയുടെ പിന്നാലെ പായുകയാണ്. അവന് ഇതറിഞ്ഞാല് പിന്നെ മറ്റൊന്നും വേണ്ട.ബി.ബി.സി.എങ്കിലും ഞാന് അവനോടു കാര്യം പറഞ്ഞു. പെട്ടെന്ന് അവന്റെ സ്വഭാവം മാറി.”ചേച്ചി അതിനെ കൊന്നൊ?ഞാന് എല്ലാവരോടും പറയും.നൊക്കിക്കൊ..” ഇങ്ങനെ കിട്ടിയ അവസരം പാഴാക്കതെ അവന് എന്നെ ഭീഷണിപ്പെടുത്താന് തുടങ്ങി.ഒരു വിധത്തില് ഞന് ഒരോന്നു പറഞ്ഞു അവനെ എന്റെ വശത്താക്കി.ഞങ്ങള് ഒരു കുഴി കുഴിച്ച് അതിനെ കരിയില കൊണ്ടു മൂടി. എന്നിട്ട് ഒന്നും സംഭവിക്കത്ത പോലെ വീട്ടിലെത്തി.
വൈകുന്നെരമായപ്പൊള് മറ്റമ്മ കോഴിക്കുഞ്ഞിനെ കാണാഞ്ഞു വീട്ടില് വന്നു.ആരെങ്കിലും കണ്ടോ എന്നന്വേഷിക്കാന്. ഞങ്ങള് രണ്ടു പേരും ഒന്നും അറിയാത മട്ടില് ഇരുന്നു. അവസാനം ആ കൊലപാതക കുറ്റം എല്ലാവരും കൂടി വീട്ടിലെ പട്ടിയുടെ മേല് ചുമത്തി. അതിനോടു വല്ലാതെ സ്നേഹം തൊന്നിയ നിമിഷം ആയിരുന്നു അത്.
ഞങ്ങള് വലുതായപ്പോള് ഈ കഥ ഞാന് എല്ലാവരോടും പറഞ്ഞു. അപ്പോള് എല്ലാവര്ക്കും അതൊരു തമാശ.അന്നെങ്ങാന് അതു അറിഞ്ഞിരുന്നെങ്കിലോ…ഒരു കോലാഹലം തന്നെ ഉണ്ടായേനെ. പക്ഷെ ഇപ്പൊഴും ആ സങ്കടം എന്റെ മനസ്സില് നിന്നും മായുന്നില്ല. കോഴിക്കുഞ്ഞെ, എന്നോടു ക്ഷമിക്കു…..

No Fail Pecan Pie- By Annie Mathews
My very dear friend and neighbor of 20 years, Joanne, makes pecan pies and sends me a couple every year. This year however, she is off to her daughter’s place for Thanksgiving. When I asked her who will make me pecan pie, she gave me her pie dish, handed down by her mother, with the recipe on it, saying “I know you got this. Enjoy making it so you can then pass the recipe onto your children.”
So here it is…
Ingredients
1 1/4 cup pecans, coarsely chopped
2 eggs, slightly beaten
1 cup light corn syrup
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 Tbsp molasses
2 Tbsp melted butter
2 Tbsp flour
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 (9inch) pie shell
Directions
Preheat oven to 375 F. Spread pecans on bottom of pie shell.
Mix the remaining ingredients and pour over pie shell.
Bake at 375 F for 45-50 minutes until the filling has set.
20 minutes into baking you may want to use a pie crust protector or tent the edges of the crust with foil to prevent the edges from burning.
Once baking is done, remove from oven and let cool completely.
The pecans would have risen to the top.
Cut into slices and serve with whipped cream topping.
